Tompkins Square Records est un label indépendant qui produit des versions nouvelles et archivées de gospel, de blues, de jazz et de country[1].
Il est distribué par Fontana Distribution[2].
Histoire
[modifier | modifier le code]Josh Rosenthal, un collectionneur de disque, lance Tompkins Square Records à New York en 2005 après avoir occupé divers postes chez Sony Music pendant 15 ans. Tompkins Square déménage à San Francisco en 2011[3]. Rosenthal gère seul le label, avec l'aide d'un directeur artistique et d'une maison d'édition[4].
Productions
[modifier | modifier le code]Le premier album de Tompkins Square est Imaginational Anthem, une anthologie de musique de guitaristes fingerstyle[5],[6].
Tompkins Square publie ensuite un enregistrement de concert inédit de Tim Buckley, Live at the Folklore Center, NYC — March 6, 1967[3],[7], puis plusieurs compilations complètes de musique gospel, notamment Fire In My Bones: Raw & Rare & Other-Worldly African American Gospel (1944–2007) et This May Be My Last Time Singing: Raw African-American Gospel On 45RPM (1957–1982) en 2009[8].
Rosenthal fait appel à Charlie Louvin pour enregistrer une série d'albums, présentant Louvin à une nouvelle génération d'auditeurs[4].
Tompkins Square sort Remembering Mountains: Unheard Songs de Karen Dalton, un album de chansons écrites par Dalton et interprétées par des artistes tels que Lucinda Williams, Sharon Van Etten, Tara Jane O'Neil (en) et Diane Cluck[9] ainsi que plusieurs disques 78 tours pour le Record Store Day parmi lesquels figurent Luther Dickinson (en), Tyler Ramsey (en) ou Ralph Stanley[10].
En 2015, Rosenthal écrit et publie le livre The Record Store of the Mind, un mémoire sur le fait d'être un collectionneur de disques et de posséder une maison de disques[1],[11],[12].
